Eden type growth models show interesting shape fluctuations, labeled as KPZ universality class. For an one-dimensional interface arising in a two-dimensional bulk, I will explain how in simplified models one finds a connection to integrable quantum chains, as one trigger to the emerging area of integrable probability. KPZ fluctuations are observed also in other systems as directed polymers in a random medium, random tilings, and one-dimensional nonlinear discrete wave equations.

The talk will be introductory and directed towards non-experts.
